PIRA index: 5K20.40

Description

The magnetic field from the coil creates eddy currents in the spinning aluminium disk. The eddy currents create an opposite mangetic field which pushes the coil up, making it levitate.

Equipment

  • Spinning aluminium disk with the electric motor
  • Coil connected with power plug
  • Liquid nitrogen

Instructions

  • Dip the coil in the liquid nitrogen
  • Start the spinning aluminium disk
  • Plug the coil
  • Move the coil on top of the spinning disk and watch levitate
